Pre-Apprenticeship - Plumbing, Electrical, Welding

Description

This is a 26-week program consisting of 14-weeks in-class and a 12-week paid work placement that follows the in-school training portion. Students receive an introduction to the plumbing trade while completing their in-class portion of the Level 1 Plumbing apprenticeship curriculum. They also gain foundation knowledge of other related construction trades, such as electrician and welding through both theory and hands-on experience. Students obtain a number of industry-specific certifications and engage in career development activities designed to prepare them for apprenticeship.

This program provides graduates with a pathway to a range of occupations in fields such as:

• plumbing apprenticeship 
• electrical apprenticeships in residential, commercial or industrial construction 
• welding apprenticeship
• entrepreneurship

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. apply workplace practices and safety procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (Construction Regulations), applicable standards, and workplace policies;
2. plan and support safe rigging, hoisting, and scaffolding operations in compliance with applicable legislation, standards, and workplace procedures;
3. communicate effectively and professionally using appropriate trades‑related language and terminology in an industrial workplace;
4. apply mathematical and computer skills to trade-related problems;
5. assist in basic plumbing, electrical, and welding tasks applying theory and practical skills;
6. apply the principles of drafting in the creation of drawings;
7. use job search strategies and communication skills to explore careers in the trades;
8. select and safely operate hand and power tools and equipment used in building construction;
9. use cutting and welding equipment and accessories to perform basic welds;
10. identify the locking and tagging procedures for equipment according to government safety regulation.

11. assist skilled tradespersons and perform trade-related tasks at jobsites.

External Recognition

Level 1 Plumber in-school completion as per Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and Skilled Trades Ontario.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be 18 years old prior to entering the work placement
• Be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada 
• Not be currently registered as an apprentice in Ontario

Selection Process

Applicants must meet the following admission requirements:

• Submit an application and a current resume
• Attend a program information session
• Demonstrate the ability to do, or be able to acquire, the necessary reading, writing and trade-related math skills
• Demonstrate a commitment to working in the trades
• Attend an interview

Additional Information

Students will be required to complete an intake assessment, which will be utilized to determine functional grade level competency prior to academic programming.
