Pre-Apprenticeship - Construction Skills

Description

This 10-week construction trades program introduces pre-apprenticeship students to hands-on learning in the carpentry, plumbing, and electrical trades, provides industry required health and safety training and certifications, and includes a paid 8-week work placement.

Career Opportunities

This program provides graduates with a pathway to a range of opportunities in the construction trades such as:

• residential, commercial or industrial construction
• carpentry apprenticeship
• electrical apprenticeship
• plumbing apprenticeship
• refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic apprenticeship

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. apply knowledge of tools and skills used in the construction industry to various carpentry and roofing projects;
2. complete basic electrical, plumbing, and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) tasks based on theory and practical skills;
3. perform workplace practices and safety procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act Construction Regulations;
4. select and safely operate hand and power tools and equipment used in building construction;
5. assist skilled tradespersons to perform construction-related tasks at jobsites.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

• 16 years of age
• not currently registered as an apprentice
• Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Selection Process

• Applicants must attend a program information session
• Applicants must demonstrate the ability to do, or be able to acquire, the necessary reading, writing and trade related math skills
• Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working in the construction industry
• Applicants will be interviewed
