Description

Georgian College’s Health Informatics program will equip you with the skills needed to thrive in the quickly evolving digital health world. You will gain skills and knowledge in the areas of healthcare delivery, information technology, and data analysis. You will explore clinical informatics, health information management, privacy and security, healthcare systems and information technology. Throughout your program you will gain hands-on learning by immersing yourself in case-studies and projects that address the complexities of emerging technologies in our healthcare system. In the second semester you will complete your capstone course by working through an industry project, exposing you to the steps of business analysis and change management in a real-world scenario. Upon graduation, you will have the competencies and professional skills required to be successful in the health informatics field.

Career Opportunities

The Health Informatics program helps graduates develop the skills they need to manage healthcare data, improve patient care through technology, and support healthcare decision-making processes. Students will learn about electronic health records (EHR) systems, data security, and healthcare analytics, which are crucial in today's digital healthcare landscape, preparing them to enter into a variety of healthcare roles with specific skills in a number of digital competencies. Graduates may find employment in the following positions:

• privacy co-ordinator
• training co-ordinator
• clinical informatics co-ordinator
• EMR/EHR analyst 
• junior business analyst

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

1. evaluate organizational needs for health information system technologies (HIST) and analyze their effects on clinical and business workflows to recommend improvements;
2. develop, implement, and evaluate health information management practices, policies and processes to support client care, organizational goals, operations, and regulatory compliance; 
3. analyze relevant local, national and global health care and health information management issues, trends, technologies and standards to support health information systems and processes;
4. implement and monitor compliance with legal health obligations and professional, ethical, and organizational standards to ensure the privacy, security, and confidentiality of personal health information during access, retention, storage, extraction, and disposal;
5. apply business and system analysis techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of health information systems technologies within a health-related setting;
6. collaborate with interdisciplinary healthcare teams to improve the collection, distribution, and security of health information, ensuring its positive impact on client care;
7. use project management tools and quality improvement methodologies to streamline healthcare processes and improve patient outcomes in clinical settings;
8. identify, analyze and present relevant data to inform and assist in decision making practices across the healthcare continuum.

Admission Requirements

• Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, Degree or equivalent in a Health, Management or Technology related field.

Graduation Eligibility

To graduate from this program, a student must attain a minimum of 60% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester. The passing weighted average for promotion through each semester and to graduate is 60%.

Graduation Window 

Students unable to adhere to the program duration of one year (as stated above) may take a maximum of two years to complete their credential. After this time, students must be re-admitted into the program, and follow the curriculum in place at the time of re-admission.
