Project planning and information technology are essential drivers in today’s fast-paced, globally connected workplaces. Businesses across all sectors require professionals who can not only apply project management skills to a variety of IT contexts, but can also manage resource procurement processes and communicate contract expectations to interested and affected parties. 

As a graduate of the Project Management-Information Technology program, you’ll have gained the knowledge and skills to design, develop, and manage information technology projects that meet the needs of organizations, and apply quality assurance processes effectively. You’ll build your skills and proficiency in the principles of project management to work as part of an effective team that drives communication, leadership, and collaboration. By leveraging emerging technologies, you’ll be equipped to undertake a variety of IT projects across different management frameworks and tools.  

This program is ideal for individuals from diverse educational backgrounds and industries who seek to develop project management competencies. You’ll learn how to use AI-driven project tools and implement risk and security project strategies from project initiation to project closure. As a graduate, you’ll be prepared to manage IT projects across various industries and to meet the evolving demands of today’s businesses.

Graduates of Project Management-Information Technology (IT) program in Canada can pursue various roles in industries such as technology, finance, healthcare, and government. Key positions include IT Project Manager, Project Coordinator, Business Analyst, Scrum Master, and Program Manager. These professionals play a crucial role in overseeing IT projects, ensuring alignment with business goals, and managing resources effectively.

An IT Project Manager leads projects from initiation to completion, overseeing budgets, timelines, and team coordination. Project Coordinators support these efforts by handling documentation and communication. Business Analysts focus on evaluating business needs and recommending IT solutions, while Scrum Masters facilitate Agile development practices, helping teams deliver software efficiently. For those with experience, a Program Manager role involves managing multiple related projects to achieve strategic objectives.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. plan and manage project goals, constraints, deliverables, performance criteria, quality control needs, and resource requirements as defined by the project participants;
  2. align the project to the organization’s strategic goals and quality assurance standards to maintain consistency and integration of planned outcomes;
  3. consult with interested parties to identify the appropriate performance controls and measurement tools to effectively manage project resources and roles;
  4. implement Project Management Institute (PMI) principles and best practices across IT projects to achieve defined success criteria;
  5. anticipate the potential risks in an IT project to identify risk-response strategies that minimize disruption and maintain security;
  6. collaborate within a project environment to foster inclusivity, engage diverse perspectives, and build team effectiveness for project success;
  7. use business and software tools to integrate multiple perspectivesfacilitate information management, and aid decision-making across IT projects;
  8. implement leadership and management strategies to address challenges within IT project environments, foster effective teamwork, and promote the values and behaviours of the organization;
  9. employ sustainable practices to promote resource and cost efficiencies;
  10. employ an entrepreneurial mindset to identify, research, communicate, and/or respond to new opportunities;
  11. analyze financial data and apply cost-control strategies to drive informed decision-making for IT projects;
  12. identify the appropriate procurement and contract management processes for IT projects to secure vendor agreements and acquire cost-effective resources and solutions.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario College Diploma, Ontario College Advanced Diploma, degree or equivalent

Applicants who do not possess the above academic requirement may be considered upon submission of a resume and reference letters that demonstrate relevant work experience.

Additional Information

Students may need to purchase or install additional computer hardware or software beyond the standard program tuition and ancillary fees. A Windows-based computer is required to ensure compatibility with program software and tools. Minimum recommended specifications include:

  • Operating System: Windows 10 or later (64-bit)
  • Processor: Intel Core i5 / AMD equivalent or higher
  • Memory: 8GB RAM (16GB recommended)
  • Storage: 256GB SSD or higher
  • Additional Important Requirements: reliable high-speed internet connection, webcam, and microphone for online learning

For Mac Users: If you have a Mac, you can look at how to run Windows applications using third-party tools that allow Windows-based software to function within a macOS environment.

Special Information 

Georgian College Applied Arts and Technology is an Authorized Training Partner (ATP)® with the Project Management Institute (PMI)®.² As an ATP®, approved instructors within the Project Management-Information Technology group may deliver approved PMI® certification preparation courses. These offerings provide students the opportunity to earn PDUs®, which may be applied toward PMI® certification eligibility and the renewal of existing certifications.

Certification preparation courses are scheduled during the academic term based on student interest and the availability of a sufficient number of participants to support an effective session.¹

Students could also earn Education PDUs® through relevant program courses within Project Management-Information Technology Program, which could contribute toward the eligibility requirements to sit for PMI® certification exams. PDUs® earned in one or more areas of the PMI Talent Triangle®—Technical Project Management, Leadership, and Strategic and Business Management—could be used to satisfy Project Management Institute’s® balanced PDU® distribution requirements for certification and ongoing maintenance.

Graduation Eligibility

To graduate from this program, a student must attain a minimum of 60% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester. The passing weighted average for promotion through each semester and to graduate is 60%.

Graduation Window

Students unable to adhere to the program duration of one year (as stated above) may take a maximum of two years to complete their credential. After this time, students must be re-admitted into the program, and follow the curriculum in place at the time of re-admission.
