Description

In addition to receiving an introduction to general carpentry, students receive exposure to heating and cooling systems, and construction small engines. Students will obtain a number of industry specific certifications to enhance job readiness. Career Development is a focus of this program with a work placement following the in-school training.

Career Opportunities

This program provides graduates with a pathway to a range of opportunities in fields such as:

  • residential, commercial or industrial construction
  • carpentry apprenticeship
  • refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic apprenticeship
  • gas technician
  • small engine mechanic

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. apply mathematical and computer skills to construction related problems;
  2. complete basic carpentry, HVAC and construction small engine tasks based on theory and practical skills;
  3. apply the principles of drafting in the creation of drawings;
  4. perform workplace practices and safety procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act Construction Regulations;
  5. use job search strategies and communication skills to explore careers in the trades;
  6. select and safely operate hand and power tools and equipment used in building construction;
  7. assist skilled tradespersons and perform construction-related tasks at jobsites.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • 16 years of age
  • not currently registered as an apprentice
  • Canadian citizen or permanent resident

Selection Process

  • applicants must attend a program information session
  • applicants must demonstrate the ability to do, or be able to acquire, the necessary reading, writing and trade related math skills
  • applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working in the construction industry
  • applicants will be interviewed
