Description
In addition to receiving an introduction to general carpentry, students receive exposure to heating and cooling systems, and construction small engines. Students will obtain a number of industry specific certifications to enhance job readiness. Career Development is a focus of this program with a work placement following the in-school training.
Career Opportunities
This program provides graduates with a pathway to a range of opportunities in fields such as:
- residential, commercial or industrial construction
- carpentry apprenticeship
- refrigeration and air conditioning systems mechanic apprenticeship
- gas technician
- small engine mechanic
Program Learning Outcomes
The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:
- apply mathematical and computer skills to construction related problems;
- complete basic carpentry, HVAC and construction small engine tasks based on theory and practical skills;
- apply the principles of drafting in the creation of drawings;
- perform workplace practices and safety procedures in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act Construction Regulations;
- use job search strategies and communication skills to explore careers in the trades;
- select and safely operate hand and power tools and equipment used in building construction;
- assist skilled tradespersons and perform construction-related tasks at jobsites.
Admission Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- 16 years of age
- not currently registered as an apprentice
- Canadian citizen or permanent resident
Selection Process
- applicants must attend a program information session
- applicants must demonstrate the ability to do, or be able to acquire, the necessary reading, writing and trade related math skills
- applicants must demonstrate a commitment to working in the construction industry
- applicants will be interviewed
