Description

Kitchen and bath design is a specialized service within the residential interior decorating and design professions. Building on previous design education and experience, students develop leading-edge, industry standard skills and expertise. Applying knowledge of how to assess client needs, students focus on function-based and aesthetically pleasing design solutions, environmental considerations, and durability to create spaces that promote health, safety, and wellbeing through accessibility. Students refine their design knowledge of industry specific materials, product specifications, fabrication methods, infrastructure issues, and business practices, while developing the skills necessary to create accurate and appealing technical and presentation drawings.

Career Opportunities

Graduates may find employment with design studios offering kitchen and bath consultancy services, kitchen and bath specifiers and/or fabricators, building contractors and developers, in retail stores or warehouses that specialize in selling kitchen and bath products and finishes. Students with entrepreneurial skills may become freelance kitchen and bath designers or start up a business.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  1. design residential kitchens and bathrooms using historical and contemporary design elements and principles, colour theory, and current trends, to meet client needs;
  2. produce specifications and working drawings using a variety of industry standard media and techniques to convey the design solution clearly;
  3. present design solutions using a variety of formats (such as verbal, written, visual and digital) to meet the needs of the client;
  4. select energy efficient and sustainable materials for fixture, finishes and appliances to create environmentally sound design solutions for the assigned space;
  5. ensure kitchen and bath designs comply with the applicable legislation, industry guidelines (NKBA), accessibility needs, and all requirements for the public's health, safety, and welfare;
  6. formulate accurate contracts and project estimates for residential kitchen and bath design solutions to obtain client agreement to project costs;
  7. use project management practices and tools to ensure the design project occurs within specified time frames and budgets to meet client and business needs;
  8. collaborate with multi-disciplinary project teams for the successful achievement of project goals;
  9. employ business practices of financial management, administration and marketing to support the operation of a viable kitchen and bath enterprise;
  10. apply the work practices related to kitchen and bath design in environmentally responsible and sustainable ways that are beneficial to the community;
  11. apply basic entrepreneurial strategies to identify and respond to new opportunities.

Admission Requirements

Applicants with a post-secondary diploma or degree in the following will be admitted to the Kitchen and Bath Graduate Certificate Program without a portfolio review:

  • Interior design
  • Interior decorating
  • Architecture design and technology
  • Construction engineering technology
  • Structural engineering
  • Environmental design

Applicants who do not meet the requirements above may be considered upon submission of a portfolio showing evidence of creative ability, manual drafting and computer aided drafting skills, and industry experience.

Graduation Eligibility

To graduate from this program, a student must attain a minimum of 60% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester. The passing weighted average for promotion through each semester and to graduate is 60%.

Graduation Window

Students unable to adhere to the program duration of one year (as stated above) may take a maximum of two years to complete their credential. After this time, students must be re-admitted into the program, and follow the curriculum in place at the time of re-admission.
