Art and Design Fundamentals is a one-year certificate program that provides a solid foundation in art and design. It also provides the opportunity for students to assess which area of the visual arts is most appropriate to their individual abilities. Effective research, problem-solving, and conceptualization skills are developed to nurture talents and prepare students for future studies in art and design. The range of courses provides an opportunity to learn new skills and refine existing skills. The portfolio developed in this program will be valuable when applying to specialized art or design programs.

Career Opportunities

This one-year certificate program prepares students for entering specific art and design diploma programs by developing the fundamental skills and knowledge that form the foundation for future studies in design or visual arts. Graduates have undertaken a wide variety of art and design related studies, enabling them to discern their particular strengths and preferences. Art and Design Fundamentals graduates can make informed choices for future career paths.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • apply the elements and principles of design to create effective compositions;
  • utilize a variety of presentation skills across a wide range of media appropriate to portfolios as well as displays of work in both public and private venues.
  • use the design process to execute two and three-dimensional design projects from concept to finished work using a wide range of materials, processes, and techniques;
  • employ vocabulary specific to design and visual art to critique a work of art;
  • analyze a work of art with an appreciation for the context in which it was made;
  • articulate art concepts, history, and the role of art in society to the general public;
  • apply basic entrepreneurial principles and strategies to the art and design environment;
  • employ environmentally sustainable design practices such as sourcing products locally/ethically and reducing the environmental footprint when solving design problems;
  • observe and adhere to protocols and procedures for health and safety in the art and design studio environment;
  • use the design process to express original and imaginative concepts in a variety of media.

Admission Requirements

OSSD or equivalent with

  • Grade 12 English (C or U)

Mature students, non-secondary school applicants (19 years or older), and home school applicants may also be considered for admission. Eligibility may be met by applicants who have taken equivalent courses, upgrading, completed their GED, and equivalency testing. For complete details refer to:

Graduation Eligibility

To graduate from this program, the passing weighted average for promotion through each semester, and to graduate is 60%. Additionally, a student must attain a minimum of 50% or a letter grade of P (Pass) or S (Satisfactory) in each course in each semester unless otherwise stated on the course outline.
